Reflecting With Gratitude After the Gala

As I reflect on Saturday evening’s Friends of Lovers Key Gala, I am filled with a deep sense of gratitude. The support shown by our community — our dedicated Friends group, committed board members, passionate volunteers, generous sponsors, and tireless park advocates — serves as a powerful reminder that Lovers Key State Park is more than just a beautiful destination. It is a place that people care about deeply, a place that inspires connection, and a place that brings out the very best in those who experience it.

Events like the gala are not just celebrations; they are affirmations. They reaffirm that our mission matters and that we are not alone in carrying it forward. Every conversation, every shared story, and every contribution reflects a collective belief in protecting something truly special.

I often return to a quote by Baba Dioum that continues to guide our work year after year:
“In the end we will conserve only what we love, we will love only what we understand, and we will understand only what we are taught.”

This message resonates profoundly with our mission at Lovers Key State Park. It captures the essence of what we strive to do every single day — not just preserve land, but foster understanding, connection, and ultimately, stewardship.

Investing in Education = Investing in Conservation

If we hope to conserve this incredible coastal ecosystem — its delicate shorebirds, winding mangrove forests, playful dolphins, and nesting sea turtles — we must first ensure that people understand why it matters.

Education is the bridge between appreciation and action.

At Lovers Key, we are proud to offer a wide range of ranger-guided programs, engaging speaker series, and hands-on interpretive experiences designed to deepen that understanding. These programs invite visitors to look beyond the surface beauty and discover the intricate relationships that make this barrier island ecosystem so unique and vital.

But perhaps nowhere is this impact more powerful than in our summer camp programs.

There is something truly special about watching a child encounter nature with curiosity and wonder. Whether they are identifying marine life along the shoreline, learning how estuaries function, or understanding the importance of protecting fragile habitats, these experiences leave lasting impressions. They begin to see themselves not just as visitors, but as caretakers.

           In those moments, something shifts.

When young visitors fall in love with this place, they carry that connection with them long after they leave. They grow into adults who advocate for conservation, who make mindful choices, and who pass those values on to others. This is how conservation endures — not just through policies and protections, but through people.

Sustainability at the Heart of Operations

While education shapes the future, sustainability guides how we operate in the present.

An important part of our ongoing efforts is ensuring that we are protecting the very resources we are entrusted to manage. That commitment extends beyond programming and into the day-to-day operations of the park.

One of our most exciting priorities is the installation of solar panels at our maintenance shop buildings — the operational heart of Lovers Key. This initiative represents a meaningful step toward reducing our environmental footprint while embracing renewable energy solutions.

By investing in solar infrastructure, we are not only lowering energy consumption and operational costs, but also demonstrating what responsible stewardship looks like in action. Visitors who come to learn about conservation will see that we are living those values as well.

Sustainability is not just something we talk about — it is something we strive to model in every aspect of our work.

Rebuilding Stronger: A New Ranger Station

I am also pleased to share exciting progress on the construction of our new ranger station, replacing the facility that was damaged during Hurricane Ian.

This project represents far more than rebuilding a structure. It represents resilience, determination, and a forward-looking vision for the future of the park.

The new ranger station will provide enhanced functionality for our staff, allowing them to better support daily operations and respond to the needs of the park. It will also improve the visitor experience, creating a more welcoming and efficient point of connection for those who come to explore Lovers Key.

Just as importantly, the facility is being designed with long-term durability in mind. In a region where storms are an inevitable part of life, building with resilience at the forefront ensures that we are better prepared for whatever the future may bring.

After the challenges our park has faced over the past few years, seeing this progress is both meaningful and energizing. It is a visible sign that Lovers Key is not simply recovering — we are moving forward, stronger and more prepared than ever.

           The Power of Partnership

None of this work happens in isolation.

The continued partnership between the park and the Friends of Lovers Key organization is essential to everything we accomplish. It is through this collaboration that ideas become initiatives, and initiatives become lasting impact.

Whether through financial support, volunteer hours, event participation, or simply sharing the story of Lovers Key with others, every contribution plays a role in advancing our mission. Each act of support helps us expand educational opportunities, invest in sustainable practices, and enhance the resilience of our infrastructure.

It is this shared commitment that makes progress possible.

           Looking Ahead with Gratitude

As I reflect on the gala and all that it represents, I am reminded that the future of Lovers Key is not defined by any one program, project, or person. It is shaped by a community — a community that believes in preserving natural beauty, fostering understanding, and protecting what matters.

Because of you, we are able to continue teaching, conserving, and growing.

Because of you, the next generation will have the opportunity to experience the wonder of this place.

And because of you, Lovers Key State Park will continue to thrive for years to come.

Thank you for believing in this special place. Together, we will protect it, learn from it, and ensure that its beauty and ecological richness endure for generations.

“Friends of Lovers Key is only as strong as the people who stand behind it. Thank you for your dedication, your energy, and your unwavering commitment. Together, we make a lasting impact.”

As many of you know I like to start my writing with a quote. So, I decided it was time to use a new tool to find the right one – artificial intelligence. Not bad!

Its that time of year when we think about why we are thankful for the events of the just concluded year and in our case Lovers Key State Park. Of course, the biggest reason to be thankful was no hurricanes, no storm surge and no more damage.

So, let me wander through the reasons we should all be thankful for this year at Lovers Key State Park.

We are thankful for our donors, volunteers, park rangers, our advisory committee, our board members, and all of the people who make this incredible park happen.

We’re thankful that the visitors to the park have a greatly expanded and renourish beach to enjoy.

We are thankful that all the hurricane debris has been removed from the park and the first major project post hurricanes is complete - our new bridge to the beach. And what a bridge - the architects outdid themselves.

We are thankful that second major project, the ranger shop complex, has been completed which provides both new workspace and creature comforts for the rangers.

We’re thankful that most of the infrastructure is back in place, including Internet, electricity and water.

Lastly, we are thankful for the resilience of our park Rangers. They faced incredible challenges and could have simply walked away. But it’s because of them that the park is thriving.

At the December board meeting FOLK elected three new board members with expertise in construction, finance and volunteer work. This provides FOLK with additional resources to continue to assist in the development and transformation of the park post hurricanes. It also gives us the resources to start planning board member transitions in the area of finance and development.

During 2026, we will be recruiting three additional board members. If you know someone or yourself who is interested in expanding your volunteer activities at FOLK, please reach out to me. We are an all-volunteer organization and hence we work hard, but our efforts are terribly rewarding.

Every November, Florida turns its attention to one of its most beloved and iconic marine mammals: the manatee. As Manatee Awareness Month arrives, so does a seasonal shift that plays a critical role in the lives of these gentle giants. The cooling temperatures trigger an instinctive migration, sending manatees on the move in search of warm-water refuges across the state. It is both a beautiful natural event and an important reminder of the responsibility Floridians and visitors share in protecting these vulnerable animals.

Why November Matters: The Start of Manatee Movements

As autumn deepens, water temperatures begin to fall—and for manatees, this change is more than just a seasonal shift. It’s a matter of survival. Michelle Pasawicz, the Manatee Management Program Coordinator with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), explains it clearly: “Manatees are highly dependent on safe and reliable warm-water sites to survive the winter.”

Unlike many marine species, manatees cannot tolerate sustained cold. When water drops below

           68 degrees Fahrenheit

, their bodies struggle to maintain normal function, putting them at risk of “cold stress,” a dangerous and sometimes fatal condition. Because of this, manatees instinctively migrate to warm-water refuges such as:

            Protected estuaries and canals

            Warm-water pockets along Florida’s coastline

These sites offer consistent temperatures that allow manatees to stay healthy until spring warms the waters again. You may see dozens—or even hundreds—gathered peacefully in these areas, resting and conserving energy.

The Importance of Slowing Down on the Water

While adult manatees can weigh over 1,000 pounds, they can be surprisingly difficult to see in the water. Their slow-moving nature, combined with their gray coloring, often leads them to blend into their surroundings. This is why FWC emphasizes caution and awareness for anyone enjoying Florida’s waterways this time of year.

If you plan to go boating, paddling, or exploring on a personal watercraft, the most important thing you can do is

           go slow

. Seasonal manatee protection zones go into effect in many parts of the state during winter months. These zones require reduced boat speeds or complete avoidance of certain areas known to be frequented by manatees. The regulations are not just guidelines—they are legally enforced rules designed to reduce collisions that can seriously injure or kill these vulnerable creatures.

The FWC and other law enforcement agencies patrol waterways to ensure that boaters are following posted signs. These signs are critical tools that help guide safe and responsible boating near manatee habitats. Maps of manatee protection zones are available online at

A simple pair of polarized sunglasses can also make a meaningful difference by helping you see manatees beneath the water’s surface. Look for telltale signs such as:

A swirl or flat spot on the water surface

            A snout breaking the surface

A large shadow gliding slowly below

Staying alert protects both you and the manatees sharing the water with you.

           Why Giving Manatees Space Matters

When manatees gather in warm-water refuges, it’s essential for people to respect their need for space. Disturbing manatees—whether intentionally or unintentionally—can cause them to flee into colder waters, which can be life-threatening. Warm-water sites serve as critical winter sanctuaries, and even short disruptions can have serious consequences.

Manatees are protected under both state and federal law. It is illegal to:

Or harm them in any way

Even well-meaning visitors should remember that the best way to show love to manatees is to observe from a distance and let them behave naturally.

For those visiting popular manatee viewing spots such as Blue Spring State Park, Homosassa Springs, or various coastal power plants, following established guidelines ensures that manatees remain safe—and that people can enjoy observing them in a respectful and responsible manner.

What To Do If You See a Manatee in Trouble

Despite protections, manatees still face numerous threats, including boat strikes, red tide exposure, habitat loss, entanglement, and cold stress. If you ever encounter a manatee that appears:

. And while it may look a bit like something from a science fiction movie, the horseshoe crab is one of nature’s greatest success stories — and one of the most important creatures in the sea.

Blue Blood That Saves Human Lives

One of the most extraordinary facts about horseshoe crabs is found in their blood — and yes, it’s

           bright blue

! Unlike human blood, which uses iron to carry oxygen, horseshoe crab blood uses

           copper

, which gives it that striking color.

But it’s not the color that makes it special — it’s what’s inside. Horseshoe crab blood contains a substance called

           Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL)

. LAL can detect even the smallest trace of harmful bacteria known as endotoxins. For decades, this property has been used by the medical industry to

test vaccines, IV drugs, surgical implants, and medical devices

to ensure they’re safe for human use. In fact, if you’ve ever had a vaccine or medical injection, you’ve likely benefited from a test made possible by the horseshoe crab.

Each year, a portion of the population is gently collected so a small amount of their blood can be drawn for testing purposes before they’re returned to the ocean. However, scientists and conservationists are working to reduce this dependence by developing

           synthetic alternatives

that can replace LAL without using live animals. Several of these alternatives are now showing great promise — a win for both human health and marine conservation.

Sand, Sea—and Careful Timing: Beach Renourishment at Lovers Key State Park

Lovers Key State Park a true coastal treasures: a string of barrier islands, wide white-sand beaches, mangrove-lined estuaries and a rich cast of wildlife.

Lovers Key State Park is one of Southwest Florida’s true coastal treasures: a string of barrier islands, wide white-sand beaches, mangrove-lined estuaries and a rich cast of wildlife. Like many Gulf Coast beaches, Lovers Key is dynamic — storms, longshore drift and sea-level change continually move sand around. Periodic beach renourishment (bringing in compatible sand to rebuild the shore) is often necessary to protect habitat, infrastructure and visitor access. But on this shoreline the timing of those projects matters enormously: Lovers Key is critical nesting habitat for sea turtles and for a variety of shorebirds, and construction must be planned to avoid impacts during sensitive nesting seasons.

Why renourishment is needed — and why timing matters

Renourishment restores beach width that protects dunes, trails, picnic areas and the fragile interface between beach and maritime hammock. A wider beach can also improve nesting habitat for loggerhead and other sea turtles and reduce erosion impacts to upland vegetation. However, active construction — heavy machinery on the sand, bright lighting, noise, and changes to dune profile — can directly harm eggs, incubating nests, and nesting birds, or discourage mothers and birds from using a stretch of beach. For that reason, managers and contractors coordinate the when and how of nourishment projects with wildlife and resource agencies.

The seasons you need to be watchful

Sea turtles in Southwest Florida typically nest on Gulf beaches in late spring through fall. In many nearby counties and state park guidance, sea turtle nesting season runs broadly from May (or May 1) through October (or October 31), with peak activity in early summer. That window is when females come ashore at night to lay eggs and when hatchlings emerge and scramble to the sea. Disturbing the beach with bright lights or heavy equipment during this period can disorient hatchlings or destroy nests.

Shorebirds and seabirds (including species like least terns, Wilson’s plovers, oystercatchers and black skimmers) also nest on beaches and dune flats. In Florida the official shorebird/seabird “nesting season” guidance frequently runs from mid-February through late summer (for some regional guidance the season is described as Feb. 15 through Sept. 1, varying by county). Many shorebird species begin early in spring and will defend small scrapes in the sand where eggs are laid — habitat that is very vulnerable to construction and public disturbance.

           How managers minimize conflict

To protect both public safety and wildlife, agencies and local governments use several complementary strategies when planning beach work:

           •

           Seasonal scheduling.

Whenever possible, fill placement and heavy mechanical work are scheduled outside sea turtle and shorebird nesting seasons. When projects must occur close to nesting windows (for example, after emergency storm damage), special permits and mitigation measures are required.

           Pre-construction surveys and monitoring.

Biologists survey the project footprint for active nests before work begins. If nests are present, work is modified, delayed or small areas fenced off and monitored until hatchlings emerge. State parks and county projects typically include nest monitoring as a permit condition.

Night lighting controls and worker training.

Since hatchlings navigate by natural light, contractors use shielded, low-impact lighting and limit nighttime activity near potential nesting zones. Workers receive briefings on identifying nests and nest protection.

During nesting season, the park and partner groups will post signs, install symbolic fencing and ask visitors to avoid dune areas and marked nests. Local “Friends of” groups often help fund signs and volunteer patrols to keep beaches clear for nesting.

Case in point: planning in Lee County and Lovers Key

Lee County and state partners have coordinated recent nourishment work in the Lovers Key / Bonita Beach and Fort Myers Beach area, especially after large storms such as Hurricane Ian. Project solicitations, permit documents and long-range DEP budgets show that nourishment planning includes ecological monitoring and timing considerations to reduce impacts to nesting habitat. That means projects are designed with both engineering and biological constraints in mind — and timelines are often set to avoid the May–October turtle season and the earlier portions of shorebird season where feasible. When unavoidable, project permits include strict mitigation and nest-monitoring requirements.

What this means for visitors and volunteers

If you love Lovers Key, the choices made around renourishment are good news — they protect the beach for people and wildlife alike. Here’s how you can help:

           • Respect posted signs and fenced areas. These protect nests, not people.
• Keep lights off or shielded at night during nesting season; turn flashlights downward.
• Keep dogs off the main beach (pets can harass nesting birds and dissuade turtles).
• Volunteer with local nest-monitoring or beach-steward programs if you have time and training — Friends groups and state parks often run seasonal programs.

Balancing short-term disruption with long-term gain

Yes — construction noise and temporary access changes can be inconvenient. But a carefully planned renourishment can protect dune systems, improve long-term nesting habitat by maintaining beach width, and help the park weather the next storm with fewer losses to infrastructure and habitat. That balanced approach — engineering guided by biology — is what allows Lovers Key to remain both a welcoming park for people and a sanctuary for shorebirds and sea turtles.

           Closing thought

Coastal stewardship at Lovers Key is a community effort: state and county agencies, contractors, park staff, volunteers and visitors all play a part. By understanding the nesting seasons and why nourishment timing matters, beach lovers can be allies in protecting nests and hatchlings while supporting the long-term resilience of this remarkable stretch of Gulf shoreline.

, with its pristine beaches, lush mangroves, and diverse wildlife, is a treasure that many hold dear. But nature, while breathtaking in its ability to create, also has the power to destroy. Hurricane Ian, which struck in 2022, devastated much of the landscape on this beloved barrier island. The storm, with its ferocious winds and flooding rain, left behind a transformed landscape, a challenge, and an opportunity for rebirth.

However, no one could predict the destructive force of Hurricane Ian. When the storm hit, it flooded the entire island with over 10 feet of saltwater for more than five hours. This deluge of saltwater, which inundated the landscape, wreaked havoc on the carefully designed plantings. The lush gardens, including the beloved butterfly gardens, were destroyed, leaving a barren landscape in their wake. The restoration process would not only involve rebuilding but also rethinking how to adapt to the ever-present threat of future storms.

           The Resilience of Nature

The story of Lovers Key's restoration is one of resilience and renewal, a testament to the incredible power of nature and the dedication of those who care for it. The challenge was clear: how do you rebuild after such devastation while making the landscape even more resilient to future storms and floods?

This led FOLK to seek out new solutions. We turned to Frank Maldonado, the owner of Duramen Landscaping, a landscape expert known for his deep understanding of local ecosystems and his ability to plant landscapes that thrive under challenging conditions. Frank’s challenge was to work only with the plants that had survived the saltwater, those that were strong enough to endure the storm’s wrath and the salt-laden floodwaters.

           The Saltwater Survivors

One of the most pressing aspects of the new design was identifying the plants that had managed to survive Hurricane Ian’s salty inundation. While many of the Welcome and Discovery Center's original plantings were destroyed by the flooding, there were still some species that had proven themselves resilient to the harsh conditions. These plants—native species that have adapted to the island's coastal ecosystem—became the foundation for the new landscaping plan.

By focusing on these survivors, Frank and his team were able to create a sustainable landscape that reflects the true character of Lovers Key. Plants like Green Buttonwood, Silver Buttonwood, Sea Oxeye Daisy, Muhly Grass, Mimosa and Cabbage Palms became central elements of the design. These plants not only thrive in the salty, coastal environment but also provide essential habitats for wildlife, such as birds, butterflies, and other pollinators, which are crucial to maintaining the island's ecological balance.

For the butterfly gardens, a beloved feature of the Welcome and Discovery Center, Frank’s team had to get creative. These vibrant, colorful spaces that once teemed with butterflies and pollinators had been completely wiped out by the saltwater. Going forward, FOLK has decided to plant butterfly-friendly species in elevated planters and other containers that can be moved to higher ground should floodwaters threaten again. This innovative solution allows the beauty and ecological function of the butterfly gardens to be preserved while minimizing the risk of future damage.

           The Elevated Planter Solution

The idea of using elevated planters as a strategy for protecting vulnerable plants from floodwaters is a brilliant one, and it is indicative of the forward-thinking mindset that drives FOLK’s restoration efforts. By raising plants above the anticipated flood levels, these planters offer a buffer between the plants and the water, keeping the root systems safe from the destructive effects of saltwater inundation. In addition, the planters themselves are portable, meaning they can be moved to higher ground or other sheltered areas in preparation for future storms.

This approach not only provides a practical solution to the problem of saltwater flooding but also enhances the overall visitor experience. Elevated gardens can create more visually interesting, interactive spaces where visitors can engage with the environment in new ways. The butterfly gardens, for example, can be showcased in beautifully crafted, movable planters, allowing guests to enjoy their beauty while also learning about the resilience of native plants and the importance of protecting pollinators.

           A Focus on Sustainability

The restoration efforts at Lovers Key are not just about returning the park to its previous state—they are about creating a sustainable future for the landscape and its ecosystems. The plants chosen for the restoration are all native species that are well-suited to the local climate and soil conditions. These plants are drought-tolerant, salt-tolerant, and adapted to the island’s unique environmental challenges. By prioritizing native plants, the project helps to preserve the region’s biodiversity, improve soil health, and provide habitats for the island’s diverse wildlife.

Moreover, the design process also took into account the need for the park’s landscape to adapt to future changes in the environment. With sea levels rising and extreme weather events becoming more frequent and intense, it is essential that Lovers Key's landscape be resilient to the ongoing impacts. The use of flood-resistant plantings, movable garden structures, and sustainable landscaping practices ensures that the park can continue to thrive even in the face of future storms and challenges.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the restoration project is the way in which the community has rallied around it. FOLK, with the help of volunteers, donors, and supporters, has been able to make significant strides in restoring the park. The project has not only provided an opportunity for environmental recovery but also for public education. Visitors to the Welcome and Discovery Center can now learn about the challenges of landscape restoration in the face of hurricane tidal surges and the importance of choosing resilient, native plants.

Workshops, volunteer days, and community events are being planned to engage local residents and visitors in the restoration process, ensuring that the park remains a vibrant, living space for generations to come. The success of the restoration project has also helped to raise awareness about the need to protect coastal ecosystems, which are often the first line of defense against storms, erosion, and sea level rise.

If you’ve ever heard the sudden, heartbreaking thud of a bird hitting a window, you know how unsettling it can be. What may seem like a random accident is actually part of a much bigger, silent crisis. Each year, hundreds of millions of birds in North America die after colliding with glass windows on homes, offices, and even park visitor centers.

During daylight, reflective windows appear to be clear flight paths. At night, interior lights lure in migrating birds, disorienting them and leading to fatal impacts.

           Why Birds Fly Into Windows

Understanding the problem is the first step to solving it. Birds collide with windows primarily because of:

Trees and clouds mirrored in the glass make windows look like natural landscapes.

            Transparency:

Birds see through large, open windows—especially on corners—thinking they can fly straight through.

            Artificial Lights:

Bright interior lights confuse nocturnal and migrating birds.

            Habitat Placement:

            Energy Efficiency:

Some films help reduce UV rays and heat, keeping the building cooler and lowering energy costs.

Natural light still floods the space without harsh reflections.

Durable, weather-resistant films can withstand the Florida sun and salt air for years.

2025 President's Letter: The Definition of Insanity is Doing the same Things Over and Over and Expecting a Different Result

The above quote by Albert Einstein could not fit better with Friends of Lovers Key (FOLK) and Lovers Key State Park (The Park).

The above quote by Albert Einstein could not fit better with Friends of Lovers Key (FOLK) and Lovers Key State Park (The Park).

I’ve had the opportunity of having leadership roles with a number of organizations over my career. All of those organizations were more complicated than FOLK. However, all of those organizations lacked one thing that we have at The Park and that is “mother.” Of course, I mean, mother nature.

Over the last two years The Park has been the victim of mother’s Fury numerous times and unfortunately, the results have been the same. Further, we can anticipate that mother will provide us with more excitement in the years to come. Therefore, FOLK has concluded that it’s time to not do the same things over and over and expect a different result. Our plans for 2025, which I’ll discuss below, are taking an approach that will hopefully reduce the impact of future weather events.

Our first major project for 2025 is to replace the landscaping around the Welcome and Discover Center (WDC) that was destroyed by the two 2024 hurricanes. Not surprisingly, the vegetation that was meant to survive saltwater invasion survived, and the vegetation that was not meant to survive saltwater invasion did not. Therefore, our plans for 2025 are to redo the landscaping at the WDC totally with plants native to the park who will withstand saltwater invasion.

Another major initiative in 2025 is to provide The Park staff with the opportunity to evacuate most, if not all of the heavy and not so heavy equipment from approaching storms. The current process takes days which sometimes they don’t have. Therefore, in 2025 FOLK is planning a major acquisition and contribution to The Park of trucks, equipment and trailers to be able to move The Parks equipment quickly out of harm’s way.

Other projects in 2025 include providing The Park with lumber, hardware and equipment repairs to both raise storage to prevent water damage and repair certain equipment. In addition, will be replacing interpretive and educational supplies. We’re also in the process of replacing recently purchased washers and dryers for the park and making sure that the new ones will be elevated.

There’s a lot of other things going on in 2025 such as the connection of Starlink Internet and installation of a permanent dishwasher in the community room at the WDC. But just as important, one of our main goals has always been and will continue to be to provide our incredible rangers with the “tools” and comforts they need to do their jobs. Most of their comfort items were destroyed by the hurricanes of 2024 and we are in the process of obtaining new items.

It is anticipated that in 2025 more events will return to Lovers Key State Park, especially as the beach restoration is completed. By the way, if you haven’t been out to the beach recently, you should invest in a half day trip to see the amazing restorations that are occurring raising and extending the beach. The restoration process is also incredible intriguing to watch. As far as planned events we’re hoping for a 5 K road race in the park, the return of beach and brews and of course the speaker series which starts on January 16 and the return of summer camps for young kids.

All of this requires both money and human effort. I encourage all of you to give whatever you can to our cause, which is obviously terribly important to protect the environment of southwest Florida. While money is particularly important, your membership and your volunteer time is appreciated and an important part of The Park’s and Folk’s future.

I ended my last two letters by saying I was hoping to bump into Chaucer and Twain on the beach or the trails. I know I won’t be running into Einstein as he’s too busy elsewhere. But let’s remember his great quote and FOLK does not plan to do the same things again in 2025 and expect different results.

           All my best:

           Jim.

Summer at Lovers Key State Park is about more than just sandcastles and sunshine—it’s about discovery, adventure, and inspiring a lifelong love of nature. In 2024, the Friends of Lovers Key are thrilled to once again hosted a series of immersive

designed to spark curiosity, foster environmental stewardship, and create lasting memories.

This year’s summer camp lineup offers something special for every age group, from young explorers just beginning their environmental journey to teens eager to dive into marine biology. Each camp session is led by passionate educators and environmental experts who bring a wealth of experience to the program. And with the stunning beaches, mangroves, and estuaries of Lovers Key State Park as the backdrop, every day is an opportunity for hands-on learning in one of Florida’s most beautiful coastal environments.

Why Choose Lovers Key Summer Camps?

When parents think of summer camp, they often imagine hiking, swimming, and arts and crafts. At Lovers Key, campers get all of that and more—with an unforgettable emphasis on science, ecology, and conservation.

            Outdoor learning at its best:

Campers spend full days outside (8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.), engaging with their environment in ways that classroom walls can’t provide.

            Expert-led sessions:

Each camp is led by highly qualified teachers from Lee County Public Schools, many with advanced degrees in science education and years of hands-on experience in environmental instruction.

            Exploration and play combined:

From kayaking and snorkeling to nature games and art activities, kids learn while having fun.

            Environmental stewardship:

Every session encourages children to develop respect for Florida’s coastal ecosystems and a deeper understanding of the role they can play in protecting them.

These camps don’t just fill the summer calendar—they help shape future marine biologists, conservationists, and nature lovers.

           What to Bring

To make the most of their experience, campers were to come prepared each day with:

A bathing suit and water shoes

            Sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses

Refillable water bottle and healthy lunch

            Sense of adventure and curiosity!

With the right gear and attitude, every child was ready to dive into discovery.

           Building Tomorrow’s Environmental Stewards

At Lovers Key, summer camp is about more than a week of fun—it’s about building a lifelong relationship with the environment. Campers leave with:

A deeper understanding of coastal ecosystems

Practical science skills from hands-on exploration

            Teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving experience

Memories of new friendships and unique adventures

By learning to care for the plants, animals, and habitats of Florida’s barrier islands, children become part of the next generation of environmental stewards.

On the time side it has now been more than two years since the devastation of Hurricane Ian.

When Geoffrey Chaucer pended his famous Time and Tide quote in 1395, he did not realize that he was talking about our beloved Lovers Key State Park.

On the time side it has now been more than two years since the devastation of Hurricane Ian.

On the tide front, the storm surge from hurricane Helene and Milton provided an unwelcome anniversary present for all of us.

, the park is without power, has sustained significant damage and will reopen as soon as conditions allow. As we know, we have an incredible park staff who will be working nonstop to reopen the park as soon as practical.

Friends of Lovers Key (FOLK) have spent the last two years since the unfortunate damage to the park by Ian, doing everything possible to assist the park the Rangers and the community to recover and thrive going into the future.

FOLKs is positioned to continue assisting the Park the Rangers and the community going forward due to the incredible generosity of the numerous donors who provided significant resources to provide assistance. So, the process of moving forward will continue because of “folks” like you. Pun intended.

FOLK is planning a series of educational and other events to occur during the fall and winter season. We are also planning for our third annual gala to be held on February 22

It is important that each former member return to the fold. Lovers Key State Park has become the number one environmental destination in southwest Florida.

has finally returned. For years, this race has been a favorite among locals and visitors who love combining fitness, community, and nature. This year’s return marked more than just another 5K—it was a symbol of resilience and renewal for Southwest Florida.

While a scheduling oversight meant that the Turtle Trot shared the calendar with the Fort Myers Beach Shrimpfest Run, the turnout was still inspiring.

gathered at Lovers Key to run, jog, and walk the course. For what felt like an inaugural comeback year, the smaller field created an intimate atmosphere and allowed organizers to focus on rebuilding the event.

Why the Turtle Trot 5K is Unlike Any Other Race in Florida

Florida is home to hundreds of 5K races, but the Turtle Trot is one-of-a-kind. What makes this event so unique?

Includes a Portion of the Run on the Beach

Very few races include running with your feet in the sand. At Lovers Key, runners start from the Welcome and Discovery Center, with the Gulf of Mexico on one side and the rising sun on the other. It’s a breathtaking way to kick off the race and sets the tone for an unforgettable experience. Why not have the start on the beach? The sand ruins the timing system!

            Scenic Trail System

The course weaves into Lovers Key’s lush trail network. Towering mangroves, shady trees, and winding paths make this portion both challenging and rewarding. You won’t find yourself staring at city streets or parking lots here—every turn of the trail immerses you deeper into Florida’s natural beauty.

            Wildlife Encounters

Lovers Key is known for its abundant wildlife. While running, participants often spot dolphins offshore, osprey soaring above, and wading birds along the shoreline. It’s not uncommon for runners to say the wildlife sightings distracted them from the miles.

            A Runner’s Destination

For out-of-town visitors, the Turtle Trot doubles as both a race and a mini-vacation. Runners often bring their families to enjoy a day at the park after the race. With swimming, kayaking, hiking, and picnic areas, Lovers Key offers far more than just a morning run.

            Larger Field of Runners

             – With this year’s comeback serving as a test run, next year will focus on growing participation and inviting runners from across Florida and beyond.

            Expanded Race-Day Experience

             – More vendors, activities, and post-race fun will be added to make it a full celebration of fitness and nature.

            Enhanced Volunteer Opportunities

             – The event wouldn’t be possible without volunteers, and next year’s race will welcome even more community involvement.

            Destination Race Appeal

             – Organizers are marketing the Turtle Trot as not just a run, but an experience. With Fort Myers area and Bonita beaches, restaurants, and attractions nearby, it’s the perfect excuse for a weekend getaway.

Why You Should Add the Turtle Trot to Your Running Calendar

If you’re a runner in Florida—or even just visiting Southwest Florida in April—the Turtle Trot should be on your calendar. Here’s why:

             – Where else can you run on both the beach and through tropical trails in the same race?

The theme for 2024 was more than just a catchy phrase.

           “Loving Lovers Key, Again!”

spoke directly to the park’s journey of renewal.

: When Hurricane Ian hit Southwest Florida in 2022, Lovers Key State Park sustained significant damage. Trails were washed out, boardwalks destroyed, and wildlife habitats disrupted. The park’s recovery has been a long and challenging process.

            Now, together again

: By 2024, the Gala’s return symbolized hope and gratitude. It reminded us that no matter the challenges, Lovers Key continues to be a place where families, friends, and visitors can connect with nature—and with one another.

The theme resonated deeply with guests, many of whom have long-standing personal ties to the park. For some, it’s the place where they bring their children to play. For others, it’s where they’ve celebrated milestones, enjoyed sunsets, or discovered a love of Florida’s wild beauty.

           The Power of Community

One of the most inspiring aspects of the Gala was the overwhelming support from the community. Local businesses stepped up as sponsors, donating time, funds, and auction items. Volunteers worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure every detail was perfect. Attendees came not just for a glamorous evening, but because they believe in the mission of preserving Lovers Key for generations to come.

This kind of collective energy is what makes Lovers Key so special. It’s not just a park—it’s a shared treasure, cared for and cherished by those who know its value.

The 2024 Beauty and the Beach Gala was a night of reflection, gratitude, and hope. It celebrated how far we’ve come since the devastation of Hurricane Ian and the challenges of the pandemic, while also looking forward to a bright future.

For FOLKS, the Gala reaffirmed that our mission is more important than ever. As Southwest Florida continues to grow, Lovers Key provides a vital refuge for people and wildlife alike. Events like this ensure that the park can continue to thrive, even as it faces new challenges.

           Why Loving Lovers Key Matters

As we reflected on the 2024 Gala theme, one thing became clear: “Loving Lovers Key, Again!” is more than a slogan—it’s a call to action. It’s about remembering why this park matters, why it deserves our care, and why we must continue to invest in its future.

From the nesting sea turtles on its beaches to the manatees in its bays, from the schoolchildren learning about ecosystems to the families picnicking under the palm trees, Lovers Key touches countless lives each year. To love Lovers Key is to love all of these experiences and to ensure that they endure.

Change comes with all kinds of consequences and the last three years were years of major changes for Friends of Lovers Key (FOLKS) and the staff of Lovers Key State Park.

Unfortunately, 2022’s changes were of a completely unexpected nature caused by the server damage to the park caused by Hurricane Ian on September 27 – 28.

The park lost almost everything except the Welcome and Discovery Center (WDC) which was built to withstand major hurricanes. However, the other buildings, the beach, the bridges, the park equipment, and the flora were destroyed or seriously damaged. On top of that the park managers house was severely damaged along with other on-site residences. On the Friends of Lovers Key side most if not all our board members and many volunteers experienced once in a lifetime devastation and displacement. So, the park staff and the Folks board found themselves starting over, literally while trying to make sense of each of our personal situations.

The first time I returned to the park, I was ready for the worst, and it was more devastating than I could imagine.

But there was Katie and her staff ready to move forward one step and a time and in no time so was FOLKS. While we literally lost all history of the Park and FOLKS from building and records and memories. But from day one Katie and her team made it clear that we had the WDC and a blank piece of paper to design the future in a better way. Their enthusiasm was infectious, and FOLKS was immediately caught up in the future opportunities.

The FOLKS Mission is - Friends of Lovers Key helping to Protect, Preserve and Support Lovers Key State Park.

With the damage from to the park from the hurricane, Folks has established as part of its 2023 Annual Goals the following to help in the recovery:

           • Work with the park staff, the Florida Park Service, FOLKS member and donors and the community to assist Lovers Key State Park recover from Hurricane Ian

So how are these donations being utilized:

The donations of the UTV’s provided immediate support to the park in the clean-up and restoration efforts and replaced borrowed equipment.

The cash contributions are in the process of being utilized for two areas, first the replacement of Park equipment and supplies and second the restoring and redesign of the landscaping around the Welcome and Discovery Center. The equipment and supplies replacements include things like hot pressure washer and trailer to on office copier to rain jackets and many things in between. The landscaping project will not only replace the damage caused by Ian but will make the area around the WDC more user friendly to activities and contemplation. This is a major project and will require additional fund raising to complete. We will keep you informed as the project moves forward.

polled 3,000 families, asking which they would most like to visit this summer to arrive at the list. Hawaii's Awahua Beach took the No. 1 spot, but with nine beaches on the list, Florida occupied the most spots of any state in the top 100. The guide calls this Lovers Key State Park "stunning and secluded (with) pristine beaches and crystal clear waters," though makes no mention of the fact that the park remains closed after Hurricane Ian damage.

We have all been distracted by the magnitude of the park and the personal devastation we have all experienced.

While this distraction has at times been difficult FOLKS, The Park and the community have pulled together to identify and begin to solve recovery issues that none of us dreamed we would be dealing with. Katie Moses and her team have been amazing at dealing with complicated issues of recovery. Today, the park still does not have electricity, beach renourishment is months away, clean-up and debris removal continue and there is no time frame for reopening the park or the ability for FOLKS to conduct events. But we all know the time will come when those things happen. And the reason it will happen, that Katie's and FOLKS teams, our generous contributors to the recovery, the community and our members will make it happen. I personally have found that our current situation is a surprisingly exciting challenge because we are all in this together and soon, but not soon enough, everyone will be Loving Lovers Key, again.
